Happy Friends, Happy You?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Is it possible that having happy friends can increase your own happiness?  There is some evidence presented by studies at both Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Diego which indicate this to be the case.  See the article “Having Happy Friends Can Make You Happy” for the details.  This happiness from happy friends spreads to multiple levels, and seems to have considerable staying power.

Interestingly enough, and thankfully, sadness does not follow the same pattern.

Memorial Day

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

For quite a while now I’ve been receiving occasional messages from an email address I didn’t recognize with reference to having been sent an “ecard”.  First off, I’m not high on the ecard thing — for me the advertising surrounding them is basically a turnoff.

Anyway, yesterday I decided to send an email to the unknown sender asking “Who are you?”, and was pleased to have received an answer – short and simple – giving name, location, business – and that he is a retired Navy veteran.   This peaked my interest since his residence was in the area of my inlaws, so I followed up on his reply telling him of my Navy experience and that since I had found that he was “legit” I figured on checking out the latest ecard he’d sent.

The fact that this weekend is Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S. had escaped my consciousness up until 2 days ago.  His “ecard” was a reminder to “Remember. Honor. Celebrate” this weekend — what a perfect gift from this unknown veteran.  I seldom take any time to reflect upon my early Navy days, nor the sacrifices that they were.  (I spent 7-1/2 years in the U.S. Navy).

Work Life Balance

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

My work-Life balance hasn’t been balancing these past couple of weeks — work has been getting all the attention — but this site is not about work!

I’m taking the time today to smell the roses  (actually its the lilacs in the vase my wife brought in yesterday that I’m smelling !)  Although I’ve been “playing” on my computer today, its been a total change of pace updating NoTechTalk.com web pages, and creating this blog post.

Talk about smelling the roses, I visited a site today that I’ve known of for a long time but not visited for a couple of years now, Cal’s Gallery Plus!  It is a site filled with beautiful slide-shows (more than a sittings worth!).  I had forgotten until stopping there today how much in the past that I’ve enjoyed the site as a respite from the rigors of the day.  Try it, you’ll like it!
