The Riding Continues

Monday, March 19th, 2012

With the continued beautiful weather and record setting temperatures here in New England, yesterday was a great day for bike riding!  I had mapped out a ride for approximately 15 miles for yesterday, but then went a different route and ended up with a 20 mile ride.  I’m finding out that mapping out a route ahead of time provides a great incentive for my ride, but I’m also finding out that as I expand my riding area it’s also great to have some idea of the road conditions I’ll face on the ride — particularly as it relates to those motor vehicles whizzing by on a narrow road with no shoulder.  As I’ve been training I’m seeing the results as I see my average speed on my rides improving.  All in all it is going very well.

My St. Patrick’s Day Ride

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Today was the day I hit the 100 mile mark with my “new” Pan-Mass Challenge wheels.  The bike and I are getting along very well, getting used to each other.  With each ride I’m becoming more comfortable and fluid with my shifting so my rides are becoming easier.  Today it was an 11.65 mile ride, with my average speed at 13mph, but the real thrill for me was to see that I’ve passed that 100 mile mark.  My rides generally are getting longer, but mostly they are sandwiched into a time slot preventing me from the longer ride I’m getting more and more anxious to have.  I guess patience is the word for now.  The weather is looking good for the next few days so I expect to get more riding in.  Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to get in a ride of 20 miles or more this coming week — that would be terrific!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

This is Massachusetts in early March — it’s 65 degrees and sunny!  We’ll take it!  It was a great day to get out on the road and ride, today for me it was a 10 mile route in the neighborhood at lunch time.  Thanks to I could see exactly what I was dealing with for terrain.  You can see the results if you click here if you care to.

The New Bike

Monday, January 30th, 2012

It’s in! I picked it up on Saturday after a short 5 mile test ride on the bike path nearby. The weatherman is promising a high 40 degree temp on Wednesday so I should be able to ride it on the hilly terrain nearby. The weather is cooperating in support of my ride :-), or at least training for it! Life is indeed good!

Training Lessons (How NOT to exit the gym after a workout!)

Friday, January 27th, 2012

I started off my week in a manner which I do NOT recommend to anyone in training. I have never been good about keeping myself hydrated through a day, but my Monday experience taught me a lesson — keep hydrated.

It seems that after a great workout at the gym Monday morning, on my way out of the locker room I fainted as the result of dehydration, result — a non-graceful exit from the gym guided on a stretcher by the EMT responders. The resultant one night stand at the hospital provided me with ample time to think about hydration :-), and the “shoulds” that I need to keep in mind a I train for that Pan-Mass Challenge ride in August.
